Ganesh Chaturthi

     Lord Ganesha figurine

Why do we celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi?

Ganesh Chaturthi is the day when Lord Ganesha was born to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati . He is elephant headed God.

How He got his elephant head?

The tale says that Goddess Parvati was bored as there was no one around so she prepared an idol of soil and gave life to it. This is how Ganesha was created. She loved him and He was very obedient son. Once when Parvati went for a bath she asked her son to guard the gates of Shivlok. She ordered her that one one should enter the gate. While Ganesha was guarding the gates. Lord Shiva came and asked him  who he was? Ganesha replied he is Parvati's son. Shiva asked him to let him enter the gate but Ganesha denied even after several requests. Lord Shiva got angry and he slit Ganesha's head.Ganesha loudly cried "Ma". Hearing his voice Parvati came out and what she saw? She saw Lord Shiva standing there and Ganesha's head and  body apart. Seeing this she got angry and took a giant shape demanding her son back. Seeing this not only Shiva but all other were also afraid. At that time  Lord Vishnu advised Shiva . He asked Nandi to go out early morning and bring the head of the first person whom he sees.

Nandi went out and saw a baby elephant early morning .He slit the head of baby elephant and brought it to Shiva. Shiva then palced the baby elephant head on the body of Ganesha and spoke some mantra. Thus, Ganesha stood from the ground just like nothing has happened.

When Parvati also called Shakti was happy to see her son back and came to normal form.

Why Ganesha is worshiped first ?

Ganesha is considered as symbol of prosperity, good fortune and wisdom. This elephant head diety is worshiped to bring happiness, wealth  at home and business. He is worshiped first before any kind of celebrations . Worshiping  Ganesha is thus considered auspicious.

Another tale about Ganesha's ....

The tale narrates that  Parvati had a divine fruit which both her sons wanted.Lord Shiva  thought and put forth the competion saying that the one who will move around the globe three times and coems first will win . Kartika took his peacock and started his journey but Ganesha was still in Himalayas. Upon inquiring he said he is not in hurry.Shiva and Parvati were sitting,he gave a little thought and moved around his parents thrice. My Parents are my globe or Brahamand.Lord Shiva was very happy to hear this and his intelligence o winning the competition.. Thus he is also considered a Lord of intelligence, fame.

Another Story is related to Indian Independence..

Lokmanya Tilak, a freedom fighter  wanted to gather people ,which was strictly prohibited by Britishers. He thought to convert the celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi as an event so he urged people in the newspaper Kesari to come out in large number for celebrations. This way he was successful in bringing out a huge crowd  and formulating strategy for freedom movement in 10 days.He addressed people and urged them to come forward to fight for freedom struggle. In this way Ganesh Chaturthi became a celebrtion event for 10 days and is still being followed by people in India.

Ganesh Chaturthi also known as Vinayak Chaturthi is celebrated in India with great enthusiasm and devotion .Especially in Maharashtra huge pandals (stage) is made and the idol of Ganesha of different sizes made of plaster of paris or soil  is kept for 10 days.

Not only this people bring small idols of Ganesha and worship it with great devotion. They decorate their temples and deity. Some people keep Ganesha for one and a half day, some for five days, some for seven days and some for all ten days. They do Aarti ,prepare prasadam of ladoo(sweet)  or modak which is Lord Ganesha's favourite. Speak slogan" GANPATI BAPPA MORIYA" and distribute to all bhakts.

Then they immerse the idol in rivers or ponds. This is when his bhakts are in sorrow as they feel that the Lord who stayed with them for time being has to be immersed. They shout slogans

 "GANPATI BAPPA MORIYA"

AADHA LADOO CHORIYA

AGLA BARAS TU JALDI AA......

Lord Ganesha is the one who removes sorrows of life, give peace, prosperity, happiness and good fortune to his bhakts.

HAPPY VINAYAK CHATURTHI TO ALL THE READERS AND BHAKTS.
