Onam a harvest festival is celebrated in Kerala,India with great enthusiasm. It is celebrated for 10 days just like Ganesh Chaturthi.

Today is the last day of its celebrations.

Onam is celebrated by Malayam  (Hindu) with great vigour.

Why is it celebrated and what is the story behind it ?

Its a harvest festival ,we know but it is also celebrated to remember the golden rule of King Mahabali. The King was very kind hearted, devout  and under his rule people lived with happiness, peace and prospered.

According to the tale once demigod asked  Lord Vishnu to defeat the king,so Vishnu took the avtar of dwarf brahmin and fought with him.In the course ,Mahabali was defeated but as he was a great devote he asked Lord Vishnu to grant him a wish .

He said: Let me visit my land for 10 days and see my people prosper. His wish to visit his land every year for 10 days was granted by Lord Vishnu.

Thus,it is said that Mahabali visits the land for these 10 days people pray and do offerings to him as well. This is Onathappan statue is placed .

These 10 days are very special as the house is decorated, rangoli (decoration)by flowers is made by women in front of their house to welcome as well as different delicacies are prepared offered ,give prasadam and eaten by the family.

Their are several competitions being held like snake boat racing (beautifully decorated),flower rangoli (carpet) ,music and dance, and even of delicacies in which preparing payasam holds special place. How the 10-days celebrations pass by is not known as everyone is engrossed in various activities.
