Its a harvest festival ,we know but it is also celebrated to remember the golden rule of King Mahabali. The King was very kind hearted, devout and under his rule people lived with happiness, peace and prospered.
According to the tale once demigod asked Lord Vishnu to defeat the king,so Vishnu took the avtar of dwarf brahmin and fought with him.In the course ,Mahabali was defeated but as he was a great devote he asked Lord Vishnu to grant him a wish .
He said: Let me visit my land for 10 days and see my people prosper. His wish to visit his land every year for 10 days was granted by Lord Vishnu.
Thus,it is said that Mahabali visits the land for these 10 days people pray and do offerings to him as well. This is Onathappan statue is placed .
